The MA Broadcast Journalism program at Cardiff University prepares students for careers in television, radio, digital, and social media journalism through an intensive one-year curriculum. Accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), the program is designed to mirror the fast-paced environment of a professional newsroom. Students receive hands-on training in industry-standard TV, radio, and digital studios while developing practical skills in researching, producing, and presenting news across multiple platforms.

The course is aimed at individuals who are curious, passionate about current events, and committed to storytelling. While applicants are not expected to be fully trained journalists, the program values those who actively engage with the news and have some relevant experience through placements, student media, or freelance work. By combining practical experience with professional standards, the program equips graduates with the skills needed to become versatile, industry-ready journalists.

Selection process:

We will review your application, including your personal statement (to assess your suitability for and understanding of the programme), and if you meet the entry requirements we will invite you to an interview. The interview will comprise of a standard formal interview and additional exercises to assess your skills relevant to the discipline and to careers in journalism and media. This may include writing skills, broadcast skills (i.e. voice tests), your understanding of the discipline, and your ability to determine news priorities. Following interview, offers will be made to the highest scoring candidates.
